Catch the steam train from Anduze (40 mins drive) to St Jean du Gard and stop off at the world-famous Bambouserie. The Pont du Gard (45 mins) is an superb example of roman architecture and a monument of such import it has a global preservation order!

It's just over an hour to the Mediterranean. Choose the restaurants, sandy beaches and shops galore of the pretty fishing port of Le Grau du Roi, or the wild waves and sand dunes of l'Espiguette.

The famous town of Avignon is another option for a day trip. The Carmargue(55 miles) is known for its birdlife but is also home to wild white horses and the bulls used in the traditional summer fiestas.
